What our customers say…

What is National Water Hygiene Training?

The National Water Hygiene (‘Blue Card’) scheme plays a vital part in ensuring the protection of public health and promoting good water hygiene practices. The scheme has been developed in collaboration with all UK water companies.

All UK water companies require individuals entering clean water sites or working on the clean water network – known as ‘Restricted Operations’, to hold a National Water Hygiene EUSR registration.

Restricted Operations’ includes working on service reservoirs, water pumping stations, water treatment works, wells, springs, boreholes as well as working on the network of water mains and service pipes.

It’s not just water company employees.  If you are working on a ‘Restricted Operation’ on behalf of a water company subcontractor or other organisation, such as Self-Lay Organisation (SLOs) – then you need a National Water Hygiene EUSR registration.

What is SHEA Water Training?

Safety Health and Environmental Awareness (SHEA) suite of schemes have been developed in collaboration with industry to provide a uniform approach to health, safety and environmental awareness training across the utilities sector, in line with Health and Safety Executive guidelines.

The SHEA Water scheme is designed for individuals who require access to operational sites within the water industry, both permanent and temporary, at all levels including operatives, supervisors and management.

The SHEA Water scheme comprises of eight modules. Six modules are ‘core’ modules and are relevant for all utility industries and support workplace practice in relation to health, safety and environmental law. Two modules provide the water industry specific content. It is designed to provide evidence that an individual has demonstrated an appropriate level of knowledge, understanding and behavioural awareness. Individuals must complete all eight modules and pass the SHEA Water assessment to gain EUSR SHEA Water registration. It is an Energy & Utility Skills Passport scheme and does not indicate any level of technical competence or skilled expertise.

Currently, upon successful completion of SHEA Water candidates will be issued with a Green (Labourer) CSCS card.

From 1st June 2025, EUSR are making changes to how SHEA schemes and CSCS cards are issued. From this date, SHEA Water registrations and CSCS cards will be issued as separate cards. This is likely to result in additional costs to candidates/employers.
